ST. PETERSBURG -- As a project to promote greater peace awareness, a
number of activities are scheduled for the St. Petersburg area for Peace Awareness Week,
June 17-23, highlighted by an Open House on The International Day of Radiant Peace on June
22, and a Walk for Peace Saturday, June 23, through the downtown area.
Coordinated by The Radiant Peace Division, the activities are
designed to celebrate June 22 as International Day of Radiant Peace worldwide. Similar
observances -- including Official Proclamations issued by various municipal mayors -- are
being held elsewhere in the U.S. as well as in Austria, England, Germany, Greece, Italy,
Japan, Sweden, and Venezuela.
Locally, two major displays have been arranged to promote and exhibit
artwork and essays by elementary school students from throughout the U.S. These students
have participated in the past 10 years in annual nationwide Peace Education Awards
projects. The displays feature banners, posters, decorated plates, color photographs,
essay excerpts and other expressions of peace awareness by students in grades 1-12.
One display is at the St. Petersburg Public Library, 3745 9th Ave. N.,
framing the entranceway into the library though June.
The second shares exhibit space with "The Kennedy
Collection," "The Cuban Missile Crisis" and a photographic tribute to
Martin Luther King Jr. at the Florida International Museum, a Smithsonian Institute
affiliate, 100 2nd St. N. This exhibit also runs through June 30.
Other activities scheduled to celebrate June 22 as International Day of
Radiant Peace include:
*An Open House at the international headquarters for The Radiant Peace
Division, a 21-year-old nonprofit organization. The International headquarters is
located at 5601 Central Ave., and will be open to the public, with displays and
refreshments, noon to 7 p.m. Friday, June 22. Ann Healy, the new Executive Director for
the organization, will be on hand to host this event.
*Benefit Days Fundraising project at Borders Books in Tyrone Square
Mall June 22-24. All purchases on those three days accompanied by a special coupon will
result in a 15 percent donation of the purchase price to the peace projects of the Radiant
Peace Division.
*Radiant Peace Walk, starting at 10 a.m. on June 23. Volunteers will
walk for Peace beginning at City Hall, moving through BayWalk and continuing to Beach
Drive NE and The Pier with informative handouts and free Peace Patches.

activities June 17-23, contact the Radiant Peace Division, at 727-343-8212 or
