[What is Peace?]

These cheerful and colorful hearts brighten their classroom.
Each child wrote their own response to the question "What is Peace?"

Radiant Peace Project Unites Children from Nine Nations!

Almuth Frankfurt and her class of second grade students were awarded an International Peace Education Award from The Radiant Peace Division for her special project for Peace Awareness. She created several Radiant Peace projects in Hamburg, Germany during a week-long school commemoration, with special focus on the Third Annual International Day of Radiant Peace on June 22, 2001.

[Peace in different languages]

The word "Peace" is displayed
in the different languages
of the students.

[Children Celebrating]

Children celebrate together with
peace songs, balloons, and
a globe of planet Earth.

This special class has children from nine nations! The children received Peace Patches, Radiant Peace cards, a Radiant Peace flag and balloons from the Radiant Peace Division. The peace dove on the Radiant Peace flag inspired the children to use the dove to give gifts of peace to others and they used the Radiant Peace cards to decorate their classroom.

Asked to look up the word for peace in their own language, the children went through a process that touched their teacher and expanded the project. Some of the children come from the countries of Macedonia, Kosovo, Albania and Turkey, and they shared that they did not know the word for peace. Many children asked their parents, siblings, and other relatives to help, expanding the project with family involvement.

For one of the special peace projects, the children were asked to join hands and form a peace circle. At first it was very difficult for many of the children of different nations to touch one another. Two days later, they proudly demonstrated their peace circle to their teacher. They were finally able to touch their hands together!
